These 10 simple questions were designed by a veteran network engineer and represent the recommended minimums for networks of larger than 10 users given current, available, affordable technologies. Allow yourself 10 points for each numbered affirmative answer. Add up your points to see where you stand (max 100 or 100%).

1. Does your organization own an enhanced firewall that scans inbound internet traffic for viruses, spyware, and other vulnerabilities?

2. Do you have the ability to monitor your user web traffic and block that which is non-productive?

3. Do you have an experienced network professional (a team is preferable as their level of awareness is enhanced by numbers) watching over your network, thinking of how new threats could affect you?

4. Does your server have an auto alerting system with self diagnosis capability? Does this system alert you to disk and other failures before they become critical?

5. Are you using an unencrypted tape system which requires daily human interaction?

6. Does this system send the encrypted data sets offsite in an automated (humanless) fashion each night?

7. Is someone with sufficient skill watching over the backup situation?

8. Do you know when antivirus protection is turned off or not updating on any or all of your computers and servers? Will a system alert you when machines encounter viruses?

9. Do you have an automated computer security patch deployment system to ensure that your machines aren’t more vulnerable than necessary?

10. Do you have solid remote connectivity capabilities that allow your trusted employees the greatest degree of flexibility when working outside the office or on the road?

If your organization is larger than 10 users and you scored above an 80 on this assessment it would seem you would need little additional help to become fully protected.
